The D.I.

Meredith and I started a little Monday Morning Mommy's Playdate sort of thing a few weeks back. Since both Jane and Kaeden go to preschool from 9:30 to 11:30, there's not much time to get anything done at home between drop off and pick up.  So Meredith and I started using the time to run errands and bargain shop together. It's been a lot of fun. Our usual stops are somewhere quick for breakfast, Target [hello! I never knew the baby clearance section existed until Meredith introduced me to it], the Dollar Store, and our favorite, the D.I.

The D.I. has become a little bit of an obsession for the both of us. For those of you who don't live in Utah, the D.I. [Deseret Industries] is the Utah version of Goodwill. It's run by the LDS church, there are lots of locations, and for some reason every single on of them smells the exact same. Unfortunately the D.I. is like like a drug. You always think that the most perfect find is waiting for you there. Only you don't know when it's going to be there. So you might just have to check multiple times a week...or as Meredith and I finally admitted to each other...multiple times per day.

Usually our loot consists of a few dinky kids toys or some children's books. Every now and then there is a bigger score, like the buggy Meredith found last week. Other times you see someone else with what you absolutely want in their cart. The price of being just a little too late.  It's aggravating to someone who has such a competitive nature as I do, and it's moments like these that just fuel my need to be there...often.

The kids didn't have school this week due to Spring break, but Meredith and I still needed our Monday morning fix. So we loaded up all 4 kids and decided to head out anyway. Knowing that we wouldn't last long with all 4 kids in tow, we planned a short schedule with a stop at the D.I.

I needed to get out of the house a few times last week, so I asked Kaeden if he wanted to go to a "weird store" with me. He liked it, and so I asked him again later in the week if he wanted to go to the "weird store" again. So this morning as we were getting up and ready for our outing, he asked, "Mom, we go to the weird store with Jane please?"  Ummmm.... yeah buddy. Just don't call it that when we're in there.... mmmkay?

I figured Jane and Kaeden would be into everything. They were, but everyone else is too, so you don't seem to notice. But these two. Oh my gosh. They were so funny!! They loved finding their own little treasures. I almost think the D.I. was more fun with them around.

Jane found this trike and immediately wanted to give Kaeden a ride.

Then the two of them found a lovely patio set made just for two.

Which sat right next to someone's discarded builder's grade bath tub.  Seriously.  Who put in the effort to haul that over and donate it?

Now I know no one is going to believe us, but this picture was not set up.  Meredith and I were sorting through all the toy crap looking for some treasures when the kids ran up and said, "Look at us!!".  They had each found a hat to their liking and wanted their picture taken.  They kill me.

And yes.  My kid is like a celebrity.  He has to wear glasses while indoors.   It's what all the cool kids do.

We've got our own version of that here in WA and I feel the "need" to check it at least once a week.

I love a good deal!!

I'm surprised I haven't seen you there! I'm a regular...I admit it. Most things in my home have come from the DI. It is like a drug, I keep having to go back for more. The thrill of the hunt. The best is when you see your own items you've sent to the DI sitting on the shelves. ha. I thought my DI obsession was bad until one of the employees told me "the regulars" line up outside the store and wait for it to open in morning. They also lurk around by the back doors waiting for a new load of stuff to come out. I haven't gotten to that point...yet :) Almost had to fight a lady for an old card catalog library drawer that was SO COOL in her cart. Hate when someone else see's the good loot before me. Happy DI Shopping!!
