Kaeden's preschool puts on a little holiday program at a theater close to the school.
Kaeden has been singing Christmas songs at home for weeks, but has been adamant about not wanting to sing on the stage for his Christmas program.
This didn't surprise me because Kaeden has high anxiety about any sort of performance.
Remember last year's preschool graduation?
Today we got to the theater and there were a bunch of kids in his class all excited for the what's about to happen. A bunch of them run by Kaeden and try to get him to come play with them, and he shyly turns them down. I could feel his tension mounting.
Then the time comes for the kids to go up on the stage. Kaeden follows me to line up on the stairs on the side of the stage, and I'm surprised there is no protest.
But then when it's our turn to go on the stage, Kaeden grabs the handrail and won't let go. He is telling me he doesn't want to go up. His teacher, who understands his fears and anxieties, immediately offered for me to sit on the side of the stage with Kaeden. He agreed that this was an okay compromise, and I thought this was going to be my view of the program for the next 30 minutes.
Luckily, after sitting there for a minute, Kaeden got the courage to allow me to go sit down with Jeff with a promise that I would keep my eyes on him.
And he kept his eyes on me.
I was proud of my little guy for staying up there for the program. I also felt a little bad that doing something like this causes him so much anxiety. For the most part the rest of the kids were having fun. Singing loudly, and going crazy.
And while Kaeden participated, hit all the choreography on point, and seemed to be signing out loud, his face just looked ...sad and detached.
But then I realized, wait a minute....
Kaeden isn't scared to be up there anymore....he's just unimpressed.
Yep, going through the motions, but his face just says, UNIMPRESSED!
Imagine our surprise when Kaeden even had a special little part where he and two other boys played drummer boys. He had never talked about this. He stood up on cue, put his costume on, and drummed exactly how he was supposed to.
All with that deadpan face.
Oh Kaeden. You kill me. Even if you are unimpressed.

This is so dang funny. Tyler is the exact same way. He sits up there with the most serious face and I've yet to hear him sing one note of any song his preschool sings. But yet, he goes up there so willingly and just stands there. Go figure. And I was going to ask, until I went back and saw the top pic, is Kaeden going to an all boys school?? baha.
