Day After Hana

After the disaster that was the Road to Hana, we reevaluated our lists of things to do in Maui, and realized that about 90% of the list consisted of scenic drives to various destinations around the island.

Knowing that it would be hard to coax the kids back into the car for any extended period of time, we resolved that the focus of the rest of our trip would be a bit different.

Instead of hitting the suggested sites, we were just going to play it by ear. Take each day at a time, and have no real itinerary.

The beauty of visiting Maui was that although it did have some pretty landscapes to offer up and travel to, we didn't feel like we were missing out by not visiting them. Customizing our trip to fit with the boys wants and needs didn't become a dilemma of "Do this, instead of that, and miss out on possibly ever seeing this again."

It was more of "Hey, we're here. We'll see what we see, and that will be enough." Had we gone to another island, such as Oahu, which is much more activity packed, I think we would have had more of a problem trying to fit it all in while still being sensitive to the boys needs.

It was nice to just roll with the flow.

The next morning my grandparents set out on another road trip to see another part of the island while we sat around and debated how to convince the kids that getting in the car didn't mean we were going on another long trip.

We looked up that there was a large park just down the road from our hotel, and we decided to try to win back their trust with a trip over there.

Loading up, Kaeden started panicking when he realized we were getting in the car.

We told him that it would only be for a short time, and after giving us a disbelieving side eye, he agreed to get in.

The park did not disappoint.

It was a beachside park, which c'mon, how cool is that?

And it was filled with playground equipment and awesome landscaping like this crazy tree.

Our plan worked, and the boys were happy once again.

We headed a little down the road and found a great beach for the boys to run and play.

Kaeden was all about the water.

Carterbabes not so much.  He preferred to be well above the water and sand.

A day like today is exactly what we needed to get our vacation back on track.
