I Love Orange Soda!

So the nurse from the doc's office called Friday to let me know that I failed my glucose test (the first failed test of my life! jk!) This means that I now have to do the really fun glucose test to see if the first one was a false positive for gestational diabetes.

I'm not too worried at this point because 1) it's rare for someone my age to have it, 2) no one in my family has had it, 3) lots of people have a positive on their first test, and 4) I'm thinking my late lunch the day of my test probably had something to do with it.

The next step is to fast all night, then get up and go into the lab (believe me! I will be there the moment they open the door. I do not do good without food in my belly--something I learned way back as a little kid). At the lab, they draw my blood (hopefully not the same lady. She hurt! The grey haired lady is much softer!), and then give me another jug of that fun glucose drink. The first one surprising didn't taste that bad. The taste was rather muted. It's just knowing that you have to suck this little jug down that kind of play tricks with your head. I swear, the last quarter of it went down so slooooow! The bummer about this test (among many others) is that the glucose drink is twice as concentrated as the first. Joy. Let me give you a math equation:

Ashley's empty tummy + lots of sugar = a very shaky and sick Ashley

After I drink the drink they draw my blood exactly 1 hr later. Then 1 hr later they do it again. Then another hour later they do it again. Here's another math equation for you:

Ashley's empty tummy + lots of sugar + 1 hr no food + 1 hr no food + 1 hr no food = a very, very shaky and sick Ashley (and chances are, very ornery--watch out!)

Yes. That's about 3 and a half hours when all is said and done. I was even "threatened" on the phone that I couldn't leave the hospital, so I better bring a good book.

As I said, I'm not too worried. I think a few other factors threw off my first test, but now those factors (food) are being taken out of the equation and I'm going to be miserable. I'm already dreaming up what food places are around the hospital to get a quick bite to eat once I'm released. Sad, I know. :)

I'll keep you updated on what I find out. I think I am going to try to get in and do the test this Wednesday. If I fail, I should know sometime Thursday. If I pass, they'll send me something in the mail a few days later.

Here's to having no phone call on Thursday! I don't want to have a "fat" baby (as many babies born of gestational diabetes are called). This kid already has a lot of growth factors going for him. He doesn't need any more help getting to that 15 lb mark!

Would it be too disrespectful to ask if they could "Shirley Temple" it...and get a cherry??? That would make the experience totally complete! Your Dad says you and Brit loved those in the Crown Room.

I'm with you; food/drink before testing probably gives all kinds of false results. Too bad they weren't more informative up front about (even "semi-fasting") so you wouldn't have to do the 3-1/2 hr. drill. Can you take a Blockbuster Video instead of a book???!!! jk..You'll Ace this one!!! Betcha you'll drink 50k Dr. Pepper's before an orange soda ever passes your lips after this!

Keep us posted!!
