So it's been warming up slightly here in Utah (like 40 degrees!). The talk of Spring was in the air, but one more storm loomed on the horizon. Today a storm was supposed to hit that I was under the impression was just going to be a medium storm. Quick, to the point, but leaving a bit of accumulation. Apparently I didn't get the late memo that the storm was going to pack a little more of a punch!
Jeff and I carpooled to work again today, and we took the Corolla because we figured the storm was going to be minor. It was sunny this morning, and it carried onto the early afternoon. Then around 3, someone at work told me it was snowing. It hasn't really stopped since. Jeff and I hung out in Salt Lake County for awhile, and the roads were crummy, but nothing too threatening. It was obvious that even the snowplows were waiting to see what the final damage would be before heading out.
When Jeff and I headed to Utah County, boy! Were we in for a surprise. It took us 45 mins to get over "The Point" (about 3 exits from where we started from). The freeway was just jammed with cars, all moving very slowly. All around us there were headlights and taillights. On the side of the freeway you could see the frontage roads jammed with cars and not even moving. I don't know why so many people were trying to get in and out of Utah County at 7:30 at night! It was insane how many people were out there.
Jeff and I got off on our exit, and it was as if Thanksgiving Point (a big event area near our home) was hosting the Superbowl. People were everywhere. Cars lined the streets, and the Maverik Gas Station was jam packed. Jeff and I made our way home, a little confused, but happy that the commute had been fairly uneventful.
Then we see a news cast.....apparently we had been experiencing (and still are) 70 mile an hour winds here in good ole Lehi! Say what???? The winds are creating drifts everywhere. Our yard looks like the sand dunes of the Sahara (at least what I've seen on TV). We cannot see out of any of our windows because the wind has plastered them all with snow. I'm talking every window. There is not an angle on our house that was not hit. As I type, I still here the wind rushing around outside. The news said that no one should attempt to come to Utah County at all. They even had news crews at the Maverik I was telling you about. People have just given in and decided to camp out for the night.
There are children in school buses stuck with no where to go. I guess a lot of schools in the Alpine school district (our district) were not even able to get their kids out, and many children are being left to sleep overnight at school! Crazy!
So much for a minor storm! Don't worry though, it should all be over soon, and we're supposed to be back to warmer temps this weekend. Gotta love the weather here.
I searched the local news to find a pic of the crazy traffic by our house, but I couldn't find anything. Then I thought I would take a pic of the drifts building in our yard, but the wind is blowing so hard it's hard to keep the door open, and it's nearly white out conditions out there. So you will have to survive with this: a couple of pics of some of our windows. I feel like I have no clue what is going on out there!
PS If you are trying to call us tonight, we won't get your call. Apparently radio communication is currently jammed up. No one's cell phone service is working either. We're not just screening our calls, I promise!
